The current economic system today has given rise to unprecedented consumerism and individualism. Most global cities promote business corporations as primary units of citizens’ lives in a bid to maximise productivity and ultimately increase Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of a country. Such focus naturally comes with consequences. And the aftermath of that is an increasingly individualistic society where its constituent units live isolated and independent of each other. This can prove psychologically damaging for the society moving forward into the future.
Apart from material growth, quality of life is also very important and this is what is missing from modern life today. Our education system thus far has been focused on industry placements, career advancements but not much focus has been placed on communal living, or simply put, learning to live with others. The education system almost across the globe puts the onus of educating its citizens onto the school system. But we fail to recognize that the household and communal centres, be it mosques, churches, temples etc are equally powerful centres of learning that can shape citizens in their growing up life. Is it time that communal centres be included in national education frameworks? What kind of time allocation can be put in place between schools and communal centres? What kind of citizens are we producing in the near future?
